I've been developing an animation workflow in which detailed textures are animated and applied to traditional hand drawn 2d animation. The effect, I hope is something like a living painting or illustration.
I'm developing this workflow as part of a larger spec documentary I'm putting together about the collaborative process between artists and scientists that goes into reconstructing and animating dinosaurs. The documentary will culminate in an animated scene depicting a dramatic, but scientifically plausible, moment in the life of a prehistoric animal, and it will animated in this "textured 2d" animation style.
It is my hope that this animation demonstrates that there are exciting new possibilities to be explored by incorporating traditional animation techniques into a digital workflow, and that 3d computer animation is not the only medium which can be used to create compelling depictions of extinct creatures.
